Meaningful Experience
Sometimes your day can change with one phone call; it can make or break your day. As I limp around my home office recovering from knee surgery, saying poor me or why me… the phone rings, any thoughts I had of pain are now 10,000 miles away. Thought to myself, what knee pain?
A friend called me, someone I have been trying to speak with for months; a very tragic accident happened at his business, and I found this our watching the national news only hours after seeing him. (I never really watch the news anymore)
I could hear in his voice the sadness of this event that would change his life for many years. He didn’t blame anyone; he didn’t blame the system; he didn’t point blame on anyone.
What he said to me was profounding, “it is very unfortunate this happens, but I have learned so much, and I will make sure this or any other tragedy will not happen again, but if it does, my entire team and I will be ready. “If you can anticipate a problem, you don’t have a problem.” — Perhaps, we both went to the same school of hard knocks!
The business will continue; he could have walked away from this and taken no action to solve or step up to be a reasonably good human being. “He took people over profits first.”
This is what great leaders do, which is why he has impressive team members.
Now it’s time to find my ice bag for my knee, enjoy my cup of coffee and look forward to the day ahead, realizing how lucky I am.
